All of the credits offered by this course count toward the CLE requirements of Criminal Procedure Rule 801, for appointment as defense counsel in a capital case.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
the CLE Board indicates that you can earn all 18 of your capital case credits by distance education. However, for the general Pennsylvania CLE requirement of 12 credits per compliance year, only 4 can be earned by distance education each year. This means that while this course offers more than four capital case credits, at most only 4 credits will count toward your general CLE requirement. (It could be fewer than 4 if you take other distance education courses in the same compliance year.)
Those involved in handling capital cases must understand the unique aspects of these cases in order to properly represent their clients. Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes and Jules Epstein have brought together a faculty comprised of Judges, Public and Private Defenders and Prosecution to explain to you what you need to know about the handling of a capital case. Start with a soup to nuts exploration of capital cases. Evaluate the impact of aggravating factors and the importance of a mitigation investigation. Examine the hot topics in capital case law and ethical issues in capital cases.
