[NOTICE about CLE Credits]: This course is 6 hours long and accredited for 6 hours of CLE. BUT For practical purposes, in Pennsylvania you will only be able to use 4 of those 6 credits. In Pennsylvania only 4 hours of distance education can be used toward your annual 12 credits, and distance education credits cannot be carried forward.]

In today's economic climate, it is more critical than ever for municipal solicitors to recognize and understand the labor and employment issues confronting their clients. Whether it involves hiring, firing or disciplining employees, negotiating with unions or addressing pension matters, failing to recognize the relevant issues can negatively impact ever-decreasing financial resources. Spend a day with the attorneys who deal with these issues on a daily basis, including employer and union-side advocates, as well as prominent labor arbitrators who decide many of these issues.

We will discuss the most common misconceptions regarding civil service, the Police Pension Fund Act (Act 600), Act 111 and other topics related to the hiring and termination of public employees. The program will also focus on learning how to avoid the biggest mistakes made by clients and lawyers at the bargaining table when dealing with police associations and other unions. Attendees will also hear the perspective of arbitrators with respect to what advocates do to win (and lose) labor arbitration cases in the public sector.

Recorded during a live webcast in March 2012.
