    Summary:

This video, a joint project of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services (IDS), reviews principles of appropriate billing by appointed counsel in criminal and other cases arising under state law in North Carolina. A series of presenters describes different aspects of the billing process, including the procedures followed by IDS in billing matters, the activities and expenses that are properly billable, the forms that appointed counsel should use, and the records that should be maintained. Throughout the video, the presenters describe the applicable billing rules and policies adopted by IDS, the rules of professional conduct that apply to billing issues, and how they differ. The accompanying handout includes IDS’s billing rules and policies and other guidance on billing.

    User Feedback Back to top
"This was very informative. SHould be a requirement for any court appointed attorney." (Burgaw, NC)
"This was a well presented and very helpfull seminar on a subject that I and probably many IDS lawyers don`t pay enough attention to. Thanks to all who participated." (Rocky Mount, NC)
"This particular seminar (IDS Billing) should be MANDATORY and FREE for all attorneys who accept a certain number of IDS cases. I began taking IDS cases immediately upon becoming a private practitioner (mostly DSS) and my paralegal had been completing all of my fee apps based on the time that I entered - now I see how dangerous that can be and the amount of attention which is required to properly complete the applications and avoid beging audited." (Kitty Hawk, NC)
"Thank you for all the work you do; and thank you for cutting the time for payments received; after the work in a case is completed. This was basic info; but everyone needs a little refresher now and then; Leo J. Phillips" (Franklin, NC)
"I love the online CLE option. It`s great for situations like mine, where i needed to squeeze in 1 more hour for the year in a specific area--Ethics--and didn`t want to attend a full day seminar just to get it, despite the fact that the hours would carry over. This option should be expanded to cover more hours!!!! Why it isn`t doesn`t make sense. I mean, if cyber CLE is good enough for 4 hours each year, then why not all 12? Does this stem from some remaining skepticism towards computers? In any case, the course was excellent." (Lewisville, NC)
"very professionally done....also, IDS staff has been very helpful and professional..." (Raleigh, NC)
"Good program and much needed instruction for IDS policy. Wish it had existed when I first started practicing law." (Clayton, NC)
"Thank you, this mode of CLE was VERY helpful and convenient." (Goldsboro, NC)
"Great program. I should have seen this 13 years ago when I started." (Louisburg, NC)
