By its nature, the attorney-client relationship in family law is more than a business relationship. This program takes a two-pronged approach to substance abuse and mental illness in relation to family law. The first part deals with client oriented issues by addressing the following topics: some common client problems, client issues that may complicate the attorney/client relationship - mood disorders, personality disorders, substance/alcohol abuse and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The second part concerns attorney oriented issues. Topics include substance abuse by attorneys and common mental health problems in the legal profession. The program concludes with a discussion on how to handle these issues. Although intended for family law practitioner, the information in this program is applicable to all areas of practice.

"Thank you for an excellent course. It was interesting and well presented by good speakers who provided professional insight as well as information. I liked being able to preview the various course offerings before selecting this one. This one was especially interesting because it combined both mental disorders of various kinds and substance abuse issues instead of dwelling on one type, which reflects what we might typically encounter. In addition, having speakers representing two professions added a lot." (Punta Gorda, Florida)
"This was my first on-line seminar, and I found it educational and convenient. I will utilize this format in the future." (Wilmington, NC)
"Very informative." (Monroe, NC)
"It would be a wonderful accomodation to disabled attorneys for the Bar to permit online CLE for satisfaction of all CLE requirements. I am able to pay more attention (rather than just sit through) speakers by taking breaks when I need them. This is a fabulous resource." (Davidson, NC)
"great!" (Mint Hill, NC)
"Would have liked more time for the psychiatrist to go into more detail regarding the various illnesses and disorders." (Raleigh, NC)
"Very good mix of client mental health and/or substance abuse problems and potential attorney problems-- in particular for family law" (Greensboro, NC)
"Overall informative" (Jacksonville, NC)
"While in general the information is available from other sources this is organized and will become one of my notebooks in the office. The information on personality was very helpful. As a family law attorney, we can be on top of the law, but our cases are driven by personalities. Thank you." (Asheville, NC)
"This course was very helpful! I would like to have had more time so that Dr. Riddle could expand on the mental health issues as it relates to clients." (Statesville, NC)
"Both speakers did an excellent job!" (Raleigh, NC)
"The on-line program exceeded my expectations in that the printed materials and slides were made available for download, the speakers (an attorney and a psychologist) were an excellent team, and both were polished presenters. The material was very informative and useful in my practice." (Glenmont, NY)
"I thought it was the best MH/SA CLE I have taken. I especially liked the idea of the issues being applied to the attorney area of practice/concentration. I thoroughly enjoyed both speakers and thought they brought a great deal of information forward in a very limited period of time." (Buies Creek, NC)
"I think it would be helpful to have a program like this directed more toward criminal clients." (Rutherfordton, NC)
"Speakers were outstanding!!!" (Raleigh, NC)
