  Travis Pickens began August 3, 2009 as the OBA Ethics Counsel. In this position, he advises lawyers as to ethics issues and compliance with the Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct, presents programs for lawyers’ and paralegals’ continuing legal education needs, monitors and trains Diversion Program participants, prepares articles on ethics and professionalism for seminars and the Oklahoma Bar Journal and serves as an OBA liaison to the OBA’s Professionalism, Bench and Bar, Strategic Planning, and Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committees, as well as the Legal Ethics Advisory Panel and Member Survey Task Force. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Language Arts (English) with special distinction in 1980 from the University of Oklahoma. He received a Juris Doctor Degree with distinction in 1984 from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

 

  His civil litigation practice began in 1984 with Musser & Bunch, P.C. in Oklahoma City, where he generally practiced oil and gas law. He was named a Director in 1989. He later associated with Mitchell, Klein, Pickens and Peck, also of Oklahoma City, where as a solo practitioner he had a general civil trial practice.

 

  Mr. Pickens has served as co-chair on the OBA’s Work/Life Balance Committee that was honored as the OBA’s Outstanding Committee in 2008, and has served as Vice-Chair of the Lawyer’s Helping Lawyers Committee. He has been active in the Oklahoma County Bar Association (Board of Directors 2006-2008; editor of the monthly publication, The Briefcase 2003-2005; and official OBA bar convention delegate 2004-2007). He was awarded the OCBA’s Briefcase Award in 2001 for outstanding contributions. He has also served on the Judicial Advisory Committee for the Oklahoma City Municipal Courts. Mr. Pickens was a recipient of The Journal Record’s 2010 “Leadership in Law” Award, primarily for his involvement with charities benefiting the homeless or disadvantaged. He currently serves as an adjunct professor of law at the OCU School of Law, of commercial law at OBU’s Graduate School (OKC-MBA program), and of legal ethics for the University of Oklahoma Department of Legal Assistant Education.
