Mr. Barlas concentrates his practice on intellectual property licensing, technology transfer and strategic counseling in a wide variety of fields, including software, hardware, semiconductor, telecommunications, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical instrumentation, nanotechnology, chemical processes, oil and gas production, process controls, and consumer products. Prior to joining Akin Gump, Mr. Barlas served as senior vice president and general counsel of Axeda Systems Inc., a publicly held enterprise software company. Before that, Mr. Barlas was senior vice president and general counsel of RAVISENT Technologies Inc., a publicly held provider of digital media software and hardware solutions to the personal computer and consumer electronics industries. Prior to joining RAVISENT, Mr. Barlas was in private practice for nine years, focusing on corporate and intellectual property transactional law. Mr. Barlas has lectured and written extensively in the area intellectual property law, and he is active in the legal and professional communities. Mr. Barlas' positions have included adjunct faculty member at the Villanova University School of Law teaching contract drafting; chair of the Advanced Technology & Computers Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association; member of the Mid-Atlantic District Export Council, by appointment of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce; member of the U.S. - Israel Technology Commission Task Force on Legal, Patent and Intellectual Property Rights; member of the Software License Committee and the Patent and Technology License Working Group of the Licensing Executives Society; member of the Association of University Technology Managers; and member of the Standards Setting Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association. Mr. Barlas received his B.A. in economics from Swarthmore College and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he served on the editorial board of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
