HON. ULYSSES GENE THIBODEAUX has been a member of the Third Circuit Court of Appeal since 1992. On January 12, 2004, he became the chief jdge of the Third Circuit Court of Appeal. Prior to his election to the bench, he practiced law for 17 years in New York City and Lake Charles, Louisiana. He served as an Earl Warren Intern with the Legal Defense Fund for one year following law school. He served as an assistant district attorney for 2½ years and then became a partner in the firm of Newman & Thibodeaux. He also served for one year as a city court judge in Lake Charles.Chief Judge Thibodeaux is a member of the American Bar Association, American Judges Association, American Judicature Society, the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association, and the National Board of Trustees of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He is past president of the Judicial Council of Louisiana/National Bar Association and past president of The Association of Judges of the Third Circuit. He served as co-chairman of the Louisiana Supreme Court Task Force on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts and was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Supreme Court for Revision of the Code of Judicial Conduct. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. He is active in numerous civic and social organizations in the Lake Charles area.Chief Judge Thibodeaux is a frequent guest lecturer and panelist on many CLE seminars sponsored by the Judicial College or the Louisiana State Bar Association.He is active in Bar Association activities. Chief Judge Thibodeaux serves on the Continuing Legal Education Program Committee and the Judicial Independence Task Force of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Bench/Bar Liaison Committee of the Louisiana Bar Foundation.He is vice-chairman of the Louisiana Judicial Compensation Commission and past chairman of the Conference of Court of Appeal Judges. Judge Thibodeaux is a member also of the Board of Governors of the Louisiana Judicial College and serves on the Louisiana State Law Institute. Judge Thibodeaux is the vice-president of the National Council of Chief Judges and National Financial Secretary of The Judicial Council of the National Bar Association.Chief Judge Thibodeaux is a 1971 honors graduate of Dartmouth College. He has just completed a three-year term on the Dartmouth Alumni Council. He earned his law degree from Tulane Law School in 1975 where he was an Earl Warren Scholar.
