Judge Mazzola is a trial judge in the Court of Common Pleas, First Judicial District of Pennsylvania comprised of the City & County of Philadelphia. Judge Mazzola was first elected to the Bench in the general election of 1981 and retained in 1991 and 2001. He is currently the senior Judge in active commission in Philadelphia County. Judge Mazzola has presided over both Civil, Criminal & Election matters. He has served as the Calendar/Assignment Judge for both the Major Jury and Homicide programs. His current assignment involves Major Jury Trials. During his time on the bench, Judge Mazzola has served on the Judicial Study Committee, the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee, and the Judicial Education Committee. Prior to his election in 1981, Judge Mazzola was employed as Claims Attorney for the Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland, as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia and in private practice with the Philadelphia firm of Stack & Gallagher. He is as member of the American Judge’s Association, the Pennsylvania Conference of Trial Judges, and both the Philadelphia & Pennsylvania Bar Associations. Judge Mazzola was appointed by both Governor Shapp and Governor Thornburg to the Governor’s Advisory Board of the Woodhaven Center for Mental Health & Retardation. He has also served on the Board of Managers of the Northeast YMCA; as a Trustee of the Order Sons of Italy in America; the Commission on Social Justice; as charter member & President of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of UNICO National; on the Board of Governors of the Justinian Society and the Parents Advisory Board of Nazareth Academy. Judge Mazzola received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University, his Masters from Villanova and his JD from the University of Baltimore. Hi is also currently a Lecturer in Criminal Law at Holy Family University. He has been recognized for his service by the Justinian Society, UNICO National, the Chapel of Four Chaplains, the Italian Press, and the American Heart Association. Judge Mazzola was recently honored with the Honorable Francis X. McClanaghan Award by the St. Joseph’s University Law Alumni.
