Ms. Winkelman is a partner with the Philadelphia-based law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP, where she co-chairs the firm’s Litigation Department. From 2002 to 2010, Ms. Winkelman co-chaired the firm’s Appellate Practice Group; from 1996 to 2010, she co-chaired and then chaired the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. Concentrating her practice in appellate litigation, both state and federal, Ms. Winkelman has handled cases in a wide spectrum of substantive areas, and before a number of appellate fora, including having presented argument before the U.S. Supreme Court. Ms. Winkelman is the co-founder and first president of the Bar Association of the Third Federal Circuit. She is a fellow and member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the ninth lawyer—and the first woman—to be selected as a fellow from the Third Circuit. Ms. Winkelman teaches Appellate Advocacy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. She is an elected member of the American Law Institute. In 2000, Ms. Winkelman received the American Bar Association Litigation Section’s John Minor Wisdom Award for Public Service and Professionalism. In 2004, she received a Burton Award for Excellence in Legal Achievement (awarded to the 20 best legal writers in the 500 largest law firms in the United States) for her article, “Just a Brief Writer?” (Litigation, Summer 2003). In 2005, she received awards from both the Pennsylvania Bar Association and HIAS & Council in recognition of her pro bono contributions. Ms. Winkelman is a former law clerk to the Honorable Dolores K. Sloviter, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
