In the course of representing clients, particularly in injury cases but also generally, lawyers routinely confront questions and issues presented by prescribed medications, over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements and illicit drugs.
This advanced program will provide lawyers with a foundation for understanding and researching drug and medication issues and will help them be better consumers of information about medication and drugs provided by health care providers and experts.
 
Topics include:
  • Resources for researching medication and drug information
  • Basic principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medicines and drugs
  • Potential interactions caused by over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements when used in conjunction with other medications
  • Role of a toxicologist, basic principles of toxicology, overview of common medicine and illicit drug toxicities
  • Treating mental health issues with medications, potential side effects,  issues of non-compliance and self-medication with illicit drugs
  • Identifying medication issues during medical record review
  • Medicine-based negligence claims and defenses

This program may qualify for 3 hours MCLE, including 3 hours, Criminal, Estate and Trust, Personal Injury and Wrongful Death, Family Law and Workers’ Compensation specialization credit.
