Estate Planning Issues for Members of Non-Traditional Families, (from: Emerging Legal Issues: Non-Traditional Families, Family Law Section Annual Meeting, April 30, 2004)
Clients in non-traditional family relationships face a unique set of circumstances in planning their estates because the law does not provide them the protection afforded married couples. It is important that non-traditional couples make legal plans to protect themselves in the event of incapacity or death. This program provides an overview of such issues by examining the purpose of a will, guardianship of children, powers of attorney and living wills for clients in a non-traditional family. The program concludes with a discussion of standby guardianships.
